Netflix: What to Binge Watch this Weekend

One of our favorite (and most used) gifts from the holiday season is our new Apple TV. It's seriously one of the coolest streaming devices and makes watching movies and oodles of Netflix shows a breeze. During my hiatus from PPD over Christmas, I definitely got my Netflix binge on. If you're looking for an excuse to stay indoors and away from the cold, here's what to binge watch this weekend:

1. Making a Murderer: If you haven't heard about this show in the past week, you are living under a rock. I heard about it one day and played the first episode that night. The gist of the story is that a man, Steven Avery, is accused of a crime he didn't commit and is imprisoned for 18 years. After his release, he (rightly) sues the department that falsely accused him. Ironically, just a few days before his settlement, Steven is arrested again, but this time, it's for MURDER...10 gut wrenching, infuriating, and interesting episodes later, I have tons of mixed feelings about the outcome. You'll have to watch to see what happens!

2. Grace & Frankie: Another Netflix original series, Grace & Frankie follows unlikely friends (and former frenemies) as they each cope with their respective husband leaving them for...each other. Law partners & romantic partners for over twenty years, Grace and Frankie's husbands, are leaving their wives to get married. Beyond the obvious family dynamics, the homes in this show are absolutely stunning. Seriously. I want to move into the beach house with Grace & Frankie. The show takes a comic angle to tackle very real situations (LGBTQ, drug addiction, divorce, online dating, etc.), and I burned right through the entire first season in just a few days. This show is only 30 minutes which is perfect for my lunch break!

3. American Horror Story: Coven. My sister spent several weeks trying to convince me to start this show. Once I had finished Grace and Frankie, I needed something to fill the void. Taking place in present day New Orleans at a teenage witch academy, the show surrounds an extraordinary group of women with extraordinary talents (who happen to be extraordinary actresses).  I'm not going to lie, this show is weird. There are several fantastical elements, but it also has a ton of gore, nudity, violence, and other themes not for the faint of heart; it's intense. However, I am slowly working my way through each episode, and while I say at least once every time "this is so weird," I keep coming back for more!

  1. Nurse Jackie. It's funny for the most part, but covers the very sad and realistic topic of drug addiction.
