Max's Wine Dive + Foodie Finds for the Big Game

Superbowl weekend is finally here, and while I am not in it for the game, I am definitely in it for the commercials...and the food! I usually scour Pinterest trying to find the next great party dish, but this year, Atlanta has me covered. There are tons of area restaurants hosting specials and watching parties this year, so I've rounded up a few of the best to share with you.

Kicking things off (see what I did there?) is Max's Wine Dive. Hunter and I had the pleasure of giving Max's Wine Dive a try on Tuesday evening, and to say that we enjoyed ourselves would be an understatement. With a menu chock full of small and large plates along with a fabulous wine list, we were in heaven. Let's get to the good stuff:

We started our meal with Max 'n Cheese, the Max's signature macaroni and cheese dish, and it was out of this world. As a combination of three cheeses, the gooey factor is there three fold along with a sharp decadent taste. Add just a sprinkle of breadcrumbs, and you've got a winning mac. Don't skip this appetizer when you go, y'all!

Of course we had to try the wine. Max's is unique in that the front of the restaurant is actually a retail shop. You can go in and purchase curated wines to carry with you to your next stop. Or, if you choose to open a bottle at the table, you can take it home. I had a Malbec and Hunter a blend. We both enjoyed our pours, but would have liked them only slightly better had they been closer to cellar temperature upon arrival. Not to worry, though! Down the hatch they went!

For our main courses, Hunter had the Hungry Max, a twist on Hungry Man frozen dinners complete with meatloaf, mashed potatoes, roasted cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, meatloaf, and a red velvet brownie. He dove right in and had nothing but rave reviews. For me? I enjoyed the fried chicken & bison sliders and truffle tater tots.

Let's talk about the fried chicken for a minute. This fried chicken was some of the best I've had! It was moist, crunchy, just a tad spicy, and hit all of the marks that fried chicken should. The best part? Max's wants you to pair it with champagne...and pair it I did! We got to try the Prodigo Brut, and it was spectacular.

For the Super Bowl this weekend, Max's is offering a steal of a deal: you can get a bucket of 8 pieces of fried chicken and 2 sides (your choice of mashed potatoes, potato salad, coleslaw, collards, or baked beans) for $35. Larger buckets go up steadily in price from there, and every one is a steal! Plus you can add a bottle of champagne for $15. So, for $50 you can easily feed (and booze) a crowd!

We had a wonderful time at Max's Wine Dive and will definitely be back. The bar atmosphere was casual enough for a weeknight dine, but makes me want to go back on a weekend to see it in full action. Thanks so much to the Reynolds Group & Max's Wine Dive for hosting us!

Here are a few other places to watch the Big Game around Atlanta:

Top off the beer, barbecue, chips and dip with something sweet from Shake Shack at this year’s Super Bowl gathering. Shake Shack is bringing its special edition “Two-Pint Conversion” to Atlanta from Thursday, January 29, through Sunday, February 1, offering guests buy-one-get-one pints of frozen custard and a Shake Shack mini foam football while supplies last. Imagine the possibilities of making your own at-home concrete with Shake Shack’s vanilla and/or chocolate custard!

If you’re a fan of Table & Main’s signature fried chicken, you’ll want some of its wings for the big game. On Sunday, February 1, bring home a football feast including 50 chicken wings with a choice of BBQ, mild hot, hot hot sauces or southern fried, celery with creamy blue cheese and 10 homemade chocolate chip cookies. Order early by calling 678.869.5178. Last day to order is Wednesday, January 28, and orders may be picked up on Sunday, February 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Note that Table & Main and Osteria Mattone will be closed for service on Sunday, February 1).

Watch the big game at Buckhead’s newest hotspot and sports lounge, Buckhead Tavern! Enjoy burgers, wings or whatever you’re craving alongside $5 Absolut Bloody Marys and martinis and beer specials. With multiple TVs spread about the restaurant, you won’t miss a moment of the action.

Super Bowl 49 is almost here and that means party planning for ravenous football fans. Let Verde take care of the kitchen this year so hosts can relax in front of the TV with the rest of the party. Verde’s new catering menu features a salsa bar, trio bar, quadzilla bar, a wide variety of tacos and the brand new nacho bar. Because what goes better with football than nachos? Ordering information can be found on the website or by emailing catering@verdetacos.com.

Whether an NFC or AFC fan, there is one thing all football fans can agree on when it comes to the Super Bowl: the food is almost as important as the game itself. Sweet Auburn couldn’t agree more! Executive chef Joey Stallings is offering two catering packages, the AFC Winning Wings Package and the NFC Pig Skin Package. Both available for $55 apiece, the Winning Wings offers 60 wings in either wu-tang, buffalo or barbecue varieties while the Smoked Pork boasts Sweet Auburn’s signature pulled pork, Texas toast, pork rinds and housemade barbecue sauce ad pickles, a feast for eight to 10 guests. Place orders by emailing catering@sweetauburnbbq.com or calling 404.819.6049. Don’t want to stay in during the game? Watch from Sweet Auburn’s bar an enjoy half priced draft beers from kickoff until the trophy has been given out!
