5 Ways to Improve Your Mood

Wednesday of this week was tough for me. Really tough. Nothing particularly happened, but nothing went my way either. It was just one of those days where I wanted to go back to sleep and start all over again. But I didn't. Instead, I set out to improve my mood which got me thinking: what are some things you can do to lift your spirits (without drinking any spirits)? Here are 5 ways to improve your mood:

1. Listen to peppy music. Seriously. I heard Leon Bridges on the Today show earlier in the week and immediately set my Pandora to his tunes. He's a bluesy, modern, R&B singer, and I can't get enough. His music transports me back in time but in such a modern way. Not going to lie, as soon as I put it on, I felt slightly better. The best part is that his music is so similar to classic oldies, that you'll find yourself listening to the likes of Ben E. King, Otis Redding, and Sam Cooke. Done and done.

2. Light a candle. Turn those senses around and light yourself a lovely candle. My desk is cluttered with candles, and I like it that way. That way, there's always one ready to go and make me feel better.

3. Get outside. Careful with this one: I made the mistake of getting outside and getting in my car which meant getting in a pretty serious road-raging mood. However, later that afternoon, I took myself on a spin around the block (on foot) and just being outside was a huge mood lifter. There are birds. There are pretty flowers. There are beautiful clouds. There are kids playing. It's a beautiful world out there!

4. Flip through a magazine. Even if it's one of those silly store mailers, flip through a magazine. The pretty pictures are transformative and will take your mind off of whatever is going on. This week, I picked up a Williams-Sonoma catalogue and wouldn't you know it, it helped.

5. Talk it out. Text someone. Call a friend. Heck, talk to yourself. Just get it off of your chest. Careful not to take it out on anyone though; there's a difference!
