Real Girls Have Blogs, Too

When my sister and I started styling this look, we had tough time deciding whether or not I should don some Spanx for the pictures. "There's this little bit of belly, and I can totally see your belly button," she said. It was true: you could totally see my lower "abs" and my relatively large bb poking through the skirt. She wasn't being rude, but offering her amazing sisterly styling advice. My response? "That's okay, real girls have blogs too." She agreed. We laughed.

And it's true. We do. I am not a size 2 or 4 or 6 or anything remotely close to that. I have hips that prevent me from wearing shift dresses, a chest that basically eliminates button downs (the one in this picture being the sole exception in my closet), and my hair never ever lays the way it's supposed to. Oh, and for the record, I'm not a plus size either. In a world of style bloggers who fit in the ideal sample size and Instagrams inundated with them,  I find myself getting more and more self conscious about my own body-type, especially when having to publish it on the internet.  But at the end of the day, I'm okay with my curves. In fact, for the most part, I kind of love them.

Luckily, shops like Lime Street Fashion choose styles that will look good on all bodies. This skirt has been good to me once again. I love that I can wear a medium, and not my usual large/extra-large in boutique sizing. I love that the top of the skirt folds over allowing me to hide any bumps left-over from a fro-yo splurge or two. I love that it's elastic-waisted...no need to expand on that.

My initial point in this post was to show another look in this amazing maxi-skirt, but then I thought about embracing those "real" feelings that everyone thinks about, but no one talks about. Sure, I could have gone deeper and into more detail, but I think you get it, right? And can we just take a moment to discuss how much I love that this is quickly becoming the song of the summer? What a fun way to send the very message I spoke of today. The universe works in mysterious ways, people.

Don't forget to enter the Lime Street Fashion giveaway that's going on now! You, too, could have an amazing, made for everyone, sisterhood-of-the-traveling-skirt style maxi. It ends tonight at midnight. Good luck!

    1. Thank you, Katie! I really didn't intend to get all sappy on the post, but when I thought about it, it just sort of worked out. And how good does the top look with the skirt? Who knew I could knot tees & button downs and pull it off all at the same time?! xo!

  4. Nicole - I love this post! It's great to hear exactly what you think because I relate to so much of it. I have to share a Spanx story with your from the night that we met - ha. These pictures are gorgeous - you're a great sister team!

Sometimes when I'm looking over possible blog pics of myself with a critical eye, I remind myself that 10 years ago most of us would have been thrilled to have a single candid picture that looked as good as any of the ones we're choosing among. It's hard to turn off the critic, but at the end of the day I just want to like I'm having fun - in some very flattering light, of course.

    1. Thank you so much Abigail! I appreciate your comments because I think in reality, it's something we all struggle with, especially as style bloggers. And you're so so right about the candids. Who knew that we were all blossoming amateur photographers just waiting to shine?

So great seeing you last night. Let's definitely plan to meet at Alon's for blogger chat one day soon!
